| All air passenger and freight transport activities are overseen by the ministry's civil aviation authority (DGAC). Its mission is to ensure traffic safety and flows, along with the design, construction and safety of airports, technical controls on aircraft and relations with airlines and the aeronautics industry. |

The major challenges |
| |
Under pressure from international competition in a context of economic slow-down since the 9-11 attacks, the civil aviation services are subject to the combined pressures of improving the quality of their services and reducing their cost.
Thus, safety, punctuality and protection of the environment have become the three watchwords. At the same time, the need to develop civil aviation construction means that the ministry has to support the aeronautics sector by helping companies to maintain the technologies of the future which will spawn the innovations to come. |
