| Maritime goods and passenger transport and leisure maritime activities are under the control of the secretary of state for the sea. He has numerous missions: helping ports to improve their competitiveness, supporting the merchant fleet, reconciling the development of the coastlines with environmental protection, improving safety at sea, preserving marine life, providing high-quality training for maritime professionals and improving seafarers' working conditions and social protection. |

Global challenges |
| |
The growth of maritime transport in France and abroad means greater involvement of the ministry's services, politically, socially, economically and environmentally. They have to be able to convince the European institutions to enact measures that will better protect coastlines and impose safety restrictions on maritime transport
operators.
The state department of the sea also has an umpire's role to play at global level in the event of disputes. Its role is crucial from an economic point of view, since it influences the modernisation of the major French ports and supports the merchant fleet in the face of highly aggressive global competition. |
